Snowdon Mountain Railway
17th September 2003

Llanberis station of the Snowdon Mountain Railway with a diesel departure.
Carriages are always propelled up the mountain. The rack can be seen between the rails.

Diesel loco no.12 "George" has just left Llanberis station and is passing the loco shed.
The smoke/steam is from one of the steam locos on shed. Photography of the shed is difficult from this public viewpoint

Steam loco no.4 "Snowdon" departing Llanberis - a glorious exhaust sound!

No.4 "Snowdon" beginning the climb of the mountain, seen here just before
Waterfall Halt. 15th Sept 2003

"Snowdon" passes by over the bridge, waterfall to left. This viewpoint is accessible from Llanberis
using the readily marked waterfall path. 15th Sept 2003

A diesel train seen in the vicinity of Hebron station - approx a quarter of the way to summit.15th Sept 2003

View from train at Hebron station. Despite the beautiful weather on this day
the wind strength was over 50mph on the mountain, and trains this day were unable
to proceed higher than Rocky Valley. A superb journey all the same!

We visited Snowdonia again in September 2011 but high winds for most of the week prevented us from reaching the summit
by train. The best we could do, as in 2003, was a photo of the summit from Rhyd Ddu station on the Welsh Highland Railway.
The station building, loco and a red & cream carriage can just be made out!
