Elsecar Heritage Railway

19th July 2015

Elsecar station on the Elsecar Heritage Centre site near Barnsley in South Yorkshire.

Sentinel diesel "Elizabeth" originally a Sentinel steam locomotive rebuilt as a diesel loco in 1965, stands
in Elsecar station awaiting its steam companion to arrive from the North.

Birkenhead 0-4-0 Saddle Tank locomotive number 7386, on loan from GWR Preservation Group at Southall,
enters Elsecar station whilst on a footplate experience duty.

The diesel hauls the train across Distillery Side level crossing towards Cortonwood.

The present limit of operation, short of Cortonwood Colliery, protected by its "Stop" sign.

The train comes into view on its return journey and can be heard working up the gradient.

All trains today were top & tailed with diesel on the other end.

The scene at Elsecar station after the loco had been coaled from 2 wheelbarrows.

Final train of the day stops at Distillery Side Crossing whilst the secondman goes to operate the crossing flashing lights...

...with "Birkenhead" in tow on the rear.
